8 Harmful SEO Mistakes
SEO has become a complex field, and simply mastering the basics can be a daunting task. And the average SEO strategy covers a lot! In addition to more advanced techniques, tools and techniques, there are some keywords, meta tags, and off-page optimizations that need to be taken care of in order to learn and use them to make the job do well. It can be overwhelming.

You may be the most detail-oriented and diligent professional, but the truth is: even if you are at the forefront of the field, there are many things that can go wrong or slip. 1. Leave No index/No follow commands on the website at startup
You can prevent pages on the website (or the entire website) from appearing in Google by using the no-index meta tag in the website title code. When Googlebot sees the tag, it will immediately remove the page from the search results.
This is useful if you are still developing a website, or if you don’t have access to the server and want more control over access to specific pages or the entire website for any reason. But what if you forget to delete the large site before it starts?
Another mistake is to put the no-index meta tag in the header code of the website and then use robots.txt to block the command.
2. Do not use Google Analytics and/or Google Search Console
Ideally, you should use both at the same time. Google Analytics provides you with all the data you need to understand the performance of your website. It will tell you about traffic, demographics, and how long readers stayed before rebounding. Google Search Console gives you everything you need to improve your website. It will tell you about the whose link, whether there is a technical error, etc. If you do not use them, you will miss them. However, some professionals completely abandoned them.
why? It’s simple: there are many tools out there. Many of them are proprietary, and few are cheap. In addition, once we find a tool we like, we will continue to use it. Although other tools may provide similar functionality to Google Analytics or Search Console, in the end, they may not provide the best results.
Another common mistake some professionals make is not spending enough time on Google itself. A good SEO can get everything he or she needs directly from search engines. The only thing a beautiful SEO tool has to do is to make the information easier to read, more accessible, and provide you with faster.
3. Optimize the wrong keywords
Do you know that SEO professionals have blind spots in keywords?
This sounds surprising because we have done a lot of keyword research. But doing so may cause you to do things too much in a certain way, even if there may be a better way to do it. Specifically, we will develop bad habits and eventually optimize for the wrong keywords. Sometimes, we should ultimately optimize from a business perspective, but we should optimize from a customer’s perspective.
Company A sells shoes exclusively for people suffering from bunions. The content of the website reflects the exhibition design, which is based on evidence and rooted in the science of the exhibition. The keywords selected are “buy shoes online” and “evidence-based shoes for bunion treatment”. Good, specific, low-competition long-tail keywords. It looks perfect, doesn’t it?
Incomplete. A few weeks later, we began to receive emails and phone calls from doctors asking about prescription requirements or how to obtain prescriptions for patients.
But we try to sell to the public. To break this habit, it’s best to spend some time researching what people will search for when they find answers to questions. Try to find out the language they use. It is not always an official term, so which language is spoken is important in front of the target audience.
4. Do not use internal links
It is a good idea to cite your resources with lots of super high-quality authoritative links. It can help your readers take you seriously and show Google that you can trustfully provide good information. (This is even one of the content they specify in the search quality assessor guide.) However, sometimes we are very excited about external links and ignore internal links.
Remember, they are also important. Internal links are a good way to improve your position in the SERP because they:
- Make it easier for Googlebot to crawl your website.
- Help hint at topic clusters and important pages.
- Attract traffic to other parts of the website.
5. Don’t improve the content
Did you know that Google has a freshness algorithm? Yes. If you are providing outdated content, you may notice that page ranking and traffic begin to drop. Obsolete content is what has become:
- Obsolete due to new statistics or market changes.
- It is incorrect due to new information.
- It doesn’t matter because the way Google understands keywords has changed.
- Depreciation due to algorithm update.
- The content is not a matter of “set it down and forget it”.
In addition, links are broken, files are lost, and keywords cannot be used. Therefore, you should make sure to pay close attention to the page. Delete old content and adjust any content that looks like it is sliding. Google will be grateful and will reward you with a better position in the SERP.
6. Not optimized for search intent
Similar to using the wrong keywords, failing to optimize for user search intent can undermine your SEO strategy. Fortunately, optimizing for search intent has become very easy, because Google will fine-tune its ability to accurately deliver what people are looking for.
Generally, Google divides search into three main categories:
- “Execute” search. These are transactional in nature, such as “buy laptops online”.
- “Know” and “Know Simple” search. These are informative in nature, such as “Best Laptops of 2020”.
- “Start” search. These are navigational in nature, such as “laptop sellers near me” or “laptop return policy site: example.com”.
- You want to optimize for each search because they also correspond to steps in the customer journey.
- In this way, the right content can be presented to the right customers at the right time when you need it to the greatest extent.
7. Think SEO is only about traffic
Jump to any SEO message board or subreddit, and you will see the following similar posts:
“Why don’t I have much traffic?” “How can I attract traffic to my new website?” “The best SEO strategy can quickly increase website traffic?”
Flow, flow. Of course, as an SEO partner, it is our job to attract traffic to the website.
A good SEO strategy will do exactly this. But is it as important as traffic? Conversion. You can have all the traffic you want, but if your readers don’t follow and make purchases or subscriptions, it will be meaningless at the end of the day.
Like everything, you should value quality over quantity. A lot of website traffic but low conversion rate means that you have attracted many irrelevant visitors. A few highly targeted customers are better than thousands of logisticians.
8. Put SEO in a “paused” state
Therefore, you have established a website. You have loaded a lot of useful super information. You have developed an SEO strategy and put it in the search engine.
You are improving SERP. People are filtering your site… and then making it all swipe.
At the end what happened? You did a great job, that’s it. You find that your SEO engine is running and feel complacent. Maybe you focus on improving your product line and other things, thinking that your SEO will last for a while. SEO is not a light switch. This is not a machine, only constant efforts to provide results. It’s more like a clockwork toy-if you don’t maintain it and continuously improve it, you will be exhausted.
Your ranking will drop. You will fade out the obscurity of Google page 2 (or later) again.
This is the point: even if you know what you are doing, many can go wrong Planning, implementing and maintaining a viable SEO services strategy involves many dynamic processes.
